Three CFRP Systems, Three Different Strengths

The carbon fiber reinforcement market offers three primary product forms: flexible fabric sheets for wet lay-up application, rigid pultruded plates for adhesive bonding, and pre-engineered wrap systems. Each serves distinct structural strengthening needs, and choosing the wrong one costs time, money, and potentially structural performance.

As a manufacturer producing all three product types, here is an objective comparison based on our 20+ years of production and project support experience.

Carbon Fiber Fabric Sheets (Wet Lay-Up System)

Carbon fiber fabric sheets are the most versatile CFRP product. The fabric arrives as a dry roll and is applied using impregnation resin on-site — a process called wet lay-up.

Our product range: 200g/m² to 600g/m² areal weight, unidirectional and bidirectional weaves. Key specifications (200g/m² unidirectional):
  • Tensile strength: ≥ 3,400 MPa
  • Elastic modulus: ≥ 230 GPa
  • Design thickness: 0.111 mm per layer
  • Available widths: 100, 150, 200, 300, 500 mm
  • Roll length: 50 m or 100 m
Best applications:
  • Column confinement (wrapping around circular or rectangular sections)
  • Irregular or curved surfaces
  • Shear strengthening of beams
  • Multi-directional reinforcement (using bidirectional fabric)
  • Blast-resistant upgrades
Advantages: Exceptional conformability to any surface geometry, ability to apply multiple overlapping layers, lightweight and easy to transport, no drilling or mechanical fixing required. Limitations: Requires skilled applicators for resin mixing and saturation, fiber alignment depends on installation quality, curing time affected by ambient temperature.

Pultruded CFRP Plates (Adhesive Bonding System)

CFRP plates are factory-produced rigid strips manufactured through the pultrusion process. They arrive as pre-cured, quality-controlled elements ready for adhesive bonding.

Our product range: 1.2mm and 1.4mm thickness, widths from 50mm to 150mm. Key specifications (1.2mm plate):
  • Tensile strength: ≥ 2,400 MPa
  • Elastic modulus: ≥ 160 GPa
  • Fiber volume fraction: ≥ 65%
Best applications:
  • Beam soffit flexural strengthening (the most common application)
  • Slab strengthening for increased load capacity
  • Long-span members where straight, consistent reinforcement is needed
  • Projects requiring rapid installation
Advantages: Consistent factory quality, faster installation than wet lay-up, no resin mixing on-site, higher fiber content than wet lay-up systems. Limitations: Only suitable for flat or slightly curved surfaces, requires surface preparation for adhesive bonding, cannot wrap around columns or corners.

CFRP Wrap Systems (Pre-Engineered Kits)

Wrap systems combine carbon fiber fabric with matched impregnation resin, primer, and putty into a single pre-engineered package. Our XQ-CFRP-Wrap-300 system includes everything needed for a complete application.

Best applications:
  • Standardized column strengthening programs
  • Projects where material compatibility must be guaranteed
  • Contractors who want a single-source system with technical support
Advantages: All components are tested together as a system, simplified procurement, technical support from a single manufacturer.

How to Choose: A Decision Framework

Step 1: What is the structural deficiency?
  • Flexural capacity → Plate or fabric on beam soffit
  • Shear capacity → Fabric at 45° or 90° on beam web
  • Confinement → Fabric wrap around column
  • Combined → Fabric (most flexible)
Step 2: What is the surface geometry?
  • Flat beam soffit → Plate is fastest
  • Curved column → Fabric is required
  • Irregular surface → Fabric is required
Step 3: What is the installation environment?
  • Temperature-controlled → Either system
  • Cold weather (below 5°C) → Plate with appropriate adhesive
  • Overhead application → Fabric (lighter, no clamping needed)

Why Material Compatibility Matters

One critical factor often overlooked: the impregnation resin or bonding adhesive must be compatible with the carbon fiber product. Using a generic epoxy with a high-performance carbon fiber can result in premature failure at the fiber-resin interface, not in the fiber itself.

This is why we manufacture both the carbon fiber products and the corresponding resin systems. Our CFRP Impregnation Resin (XQ-TJ) is specifically formulated and tested with our fabric products. Our Plate Bonding Adhesive (XQ-PB) is designed for our pultruded plates.
