What Makes a Repair Mortar "High Strength"?

Standard construction mortar achieves 10-15 MPa compressive strength. General-purpose repair mortars reach 25-35 MPa. High-strength repair mortars exceed 45 MPa — matching or exceeding the strength of the concrete they are repairing.

High strength in a repair mortar is achieved through a combination of low water-to-cement ratio, fine reactive cement, silica fume or microsilica addition, polymer modification, and optimized aggregate grading.

Our High-Strength Repair Mortar Range

We manufacture four repair mortar products that qualify as "high strength," each optimized for different repair scenarios:

Polymer-Modified Repair Mortar (XQ-SJ-P) — ≥ 45 MPa

The workhorse repair mortar for most structural patch repairs. Polymer latex modification provides excellent bond to substrate, reduced shrinkage cracking, and improved freeze-thaw durability. This is our most widely used repair product.

Structural Repair Mortar (XQ-SJ-SR) — ≥ 60 MPa

For load-bearing structural repairs where the mortar must carry significant compressive loads. Its elastic modulus is engineered to match typical C30-C50 concrete, preventing stress concentration at the repair boundary.

Epoxy Repair Mortar (XQ-SJ-E) — ≥ 70 MPa

Our highest-strength option, based on epoxy resin rather than cement. Provides exceptional chemical resistance and early strength. Best for thin-section repairs (5-30mm), chemical environments, and situations requiring rapid return to service.

Rapid-Set Repair Mortar (XQ-SJ-R) — ≥ 55 MPa (28 days)

Achieves 20 MPa in just 1 hour through accelerated cement hydration. Designed for emergency highway and bridge repairs where traffic reopening is time-critical. Reaches full strength of 55 MPa by 28 days.

Mixing Procedure

Proper mixing is essential for achieving the specified strength. The most common mistake is adding too much water, which improves workability but destroys strength.

Standard procedure:
  • Measure the exact amount of clean water specified on the datasheet (typically 14-18% by weight of powder)
  • Pour water into the mixing container first
  • Add the powder gradually while mixing with a low-speed drill mixer (300-600 RPM)
  • Mix for 3 minutes until a uniform, lump-free consistency is achieved
  • Allow to stand for 2 minutes, then mix again briefly
  • Use within the working time (typically 30-60 minutes at 25°C)
  • Critical rules:
    • Never add extra water to improve workability — adjust by extended mixing instead
    • Never re-temper mortar that has begun to set by adding water
    • Clean tools and containers between batches to prevent accelerated setting

    Application Guidelines

Maximum layer thickness: Each product has a maximum single-layer thickness. Exceeding this causes internal heat buildup during cure, leading to thermal cracking. Our polymer-modified mortar allows up to 50mm per layer; structural mortar up to 75mm. Minimum thickness: Feathered edges below 10mm will debond. Always saw-cut a minimum 10mm step at repair boundaries. Reinforcement: For repairs deeper than 75mm, or where structural reinforcement is exposed, apply mortar around and behind the rebar to achieve full encapsulation. Press mortar firmly behind bars to eliminate voids. Curing: Moist cure for minimum 7 days. Begin curing as soon as the mortar surface has set firm enough not to be damaged by the curing medium (typically 4-8 hours). Our rapid-set mortar can be cured after 1 hour.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the strongest cement repair mortar available?

The strongest cement repair mortars are epoxy-modified formulations that achieve compressive strength of 65 to 75 MPa and tensile strength of 15 to 20 MPa. Our epoxy repair mortar XQ-SJ-E reaches 75 MPa compressive strength at 28 days. For projects where cement-based chemistry is preferred (better thermal compatibility with concrete), polymer-modified high-strength cement repair mortar achieves 55 to 60 MPa, which exceeds the strength of most structural concrete grades including C50.

What is the difference between high strength cement repair mortar and regular mortar?

Regular construction mortar achieves 10 to 15 MPa compressive strength. High strength cement repair mortar exceeds 45 MPa — matching or surpassing the concrete it repairs. The difference comes from: low water-to-cement ratio (0.15 to 0.20 vs 0.45 to 0.60 for regular mortar), silica fume or microsilica addition for pore refinement, polymer modification (SBR or acrylic) for improved bonding and flexibility, and optimized aggregate grading for maximum packing density. These modifications also give high-strength repair mortar superior bond strength (2.0+ MPa vs 0.5 MPa for regular mortar), lower shrinkage, and better freeze-thaw durability.

How do you mix high strength cement repair mortar?

Add the powder to pre-measured clean water (never the reverse) at the ratio specified on the datasheet — typically 14 to 16 percent water by weight. Mix with a low-speed drill mixer (400 to 600 RPM) for 3 to 5 minutes until uniform consistency with no lumps. Do not over-mix or add extra water — over-watering is the single most common cause of strength failure. Let the mixed mortar rest for 2 minutes, then remix briefly before application. Use the mixed material within its pot life (typically 30 to 45 minutes at 25 degrees Celsius).

Can cementitious repair mortar be used on vertical and overhead surfaces?

Yes. Thixotropic (non-sag) formulations are specifically designed for vertical and overhead application. Our polymer-modified repair mortar XQ-SJ-P has a thixotropic consistency that resists sagging at application thicknesses up to 30 mm on vertical surfaces and 20 mm overhead. For deeper repairs in overhead positions, build up in multiple layers of 15 to 20 mm each. Standard flowable repair mortars are only suitable for horizontal applications — they will sag and slump on vertical surfaces.
