What Is Segment Splicing Adhesive?

Segment splicing adhesive is a specialized structural epoxy used to join precast concrete segments in segmental bridge construction. When a bridge is built from individual precast segments assembled on-site (rather than cast-in-place), the joints between segments must be bonded with adhesive to ensure waterproofing, load transfer, and durability.

This is a highly specialized product category — only a handful of manufacturers worldwide produce adhesives that meet the demanding requirements of segmental bridge construction. We manufacture four formulations designed for different project conditions.

Our Segment Splicing Adhesive Range

Standard Splicing Adhesive (XQ-PJ-S)

The most widely used formulation for normal temperature conditions (15-35°C).
  • Compressive strength: ≥ 70 MPa
  • Tensile strength: ≥ 20 MPa
  • Bond strength to concrete: ≥ 4.0 MPa
  • Open time at 25°C: 30-40 minutes
  • Suitable for segment weights up to 80 tons

Rapid-Set Splicing Adhesive (XQ-PJ-R)

For projects requiring accelerated construction schedules.
  • Achieves handling strength in 4 hours at 25°C
  • Final strength equivalent to standard formulation
  • Open time at 25°C: 15-20 minutes
  • Designed for rapid segment erection sequences

Low-Temperature Splicing Adhesive (XQ-PJ-LT)

For cold weather construction (ambient temperature 0-15°C).
  • Modified hardener system that cures reliably at low temperatures
  • Open time extended to 45-60 minutes (compensating for slower reaction)
  • Full cure in 48 hours at 5°C

High-Flow Splicing Adhesive (XQ-PJ-HF)

For match-cast segments with tight tolerances requiring thin, uniform bond lines.
  • Lower viscosity than standard grade
  • Uniform bond line thickness of 1-2mm
  • Self-leveling properties on horizontal joints
  • Excellent squeeze-out characteristics under segment weight

Application Guidelines for Segment Splicing

Segment splicing is a precision operation. The adhesive must be applied correctly to ensure complete coverage of the joint face without voids, and the segments must be aligned before the adhesive begins to set.

Surface preparation: Joint faces must be clean, dry, and free of curing compound, form oil, or other contamination. Wire brush or water blast the joint faces within 24 hours of assembly. For match-cast segments, verify fit by dry-assembling without adhesive first. Mixing: Mix components at the specified ratio using a slow-speed mixer. Mix for 3 minutes minimum until uniform color is achieved. Do not mix more adhesive than can be applied within the open time. Application: Apply adhesive to both joint faces using a notched trowel or roller. Ensure coverage of the entire joint area — voids in the adhesive layer become water paths and stress concentrators. Typical adhesive thickness is 1-3mm per face (2-6mm total joint thickness). Assembly: Position the segment using lifting equipment. Apply temporary post-tensioning to squeeze the joint closed and extrude excess adhesive from all edges. Minimum squeeze pressure is 0.3 MPa across the joint face. Maintain pressure until the adhesive reaches handling strength. Quality control: Inspect squeeze-out around the entire joint perimeter. Complete, continuous squeeze-out confirms full coverage. Gaps in squeeze-out indicate potential voids that must be investigated.

Why Material Selection Matters

Segmental bridges are designed for 100-year service life. The joint adhesive must maintain its properties throughout this period under constant load, temperature cycling, water exposure, and in some cases, de-icing salt attack.

Using a general-purpose epoxy adhesive for segment joints is a false economy. Our segment splicing adhesives are specifically formulated for long-term creep resistance under sustained compressive stress, water impermeability to protect post-tensioning tendons from corrosion, thermal cycling resistance without bond degradation, and compatibility with both cementitious and epoxy grout used in post-tensioning ducts.
