Golden Retriever Grooming Tips
Golden Retrievers should NOT be shaved or clipped short. Their double coat provides insulation in both heat and cold, and protects against sunburn and insect bites.
Professional grooming for Goldens focuses on "tidying" — trimming excess feathering, cleaning up paw pads, and shaping ears and hocks.
Use a #10 blade for sanitary areas and paw pad cleanup only. The rest of the body should be scissored or thinned, not clipped.
A quality undercoat rake and de-shedding tool removes dead undercoat more effectively than clipping.
If an owner insists on a body clip (not recommended), never go shorter than a #5F or guard comb. A #3F or longer is safer to avoid damaging the coat structure.
