What Are Epoxy Anchors and Why Use Them?

Epoxy anchors — also called chemical anchors or adhesive anchors — use a two-component epoxy resin to bond threaded rods, rebar, or bolts into drilled holes in concrete. Unlike mechanical expansion anchors that rely on friction and wedging, epoxy anchors create a structural bond between the steel element and the surrounding concrete.

Choose epoxy anchors when: loads are high, edge distances are small, anchors are closely spaced, the concrete is cracked, or the application is safety-critical (seismic zones, overhead). Choose mechanical anchors when: immediate loading is needed, the application is temporary, or cost is the primary driver for non-critical connections.

Types of Epoxy Anchor Adhesives

We manufacture five main categories of anchor adhesive, each formulated for specific applications:

1. Standard Epoxy Anchor (XQ-ZJ-E585 / XQ-ZJ-360)

Our most versatile anchor adhesive for general-purpose anchoring in uncracked concrete. Available in 585ml and 360ml cartridges with static mixing nozzles.
  • Bond strength in C20 concrete: ≥ 12 MPa
  • Working time at 25°C: 6 minutes
  • Full cure: 24 hours
  • Applications: Equipment mounting, steel connections, guardrails

2. Chemical Anchor Adhesive (XQ-ZJ-C420)

A vinyl ester hybrid formulation that offers faster cure time and better chemical resistance than pure epoxy.
  • Bond strength: ≥ 14 MPa
  • Working time at 25°C: 4 minutes
  • Full cure: 6-8 hours
  • Applications: Industrial environments, wet conditions, chemical exposure

3. Vinyl Ester Anchor (XQ-ZJ-V390 / XQ-ZJ-VF650)

High-performance formulation for cracked concrete and seismic applications.
  • Approved for use in cracked concrete
  • Seismic performance category C1/C2
  • Fast-set version available (XQ-ZJ-VF650) for cold weather
  • Applications: Seismic retrofit, safety-critical connections

4. Injectable Anchor (XQ-ZJ-IA)

Low-viscosity formulation for small-diameter holes and overhead applications.
  • Excellent penetration into rough hole surfaces
  • Minimal void formation
  • Applications: Overhead anchoring, small-diameter rebar

5. Bulk Anchor Adhesive (XQ-ZJ-B20)

20kg bulk packaging for high-volume anchoring projects.
  • Cost-effective for large projects
  • Requires manual mixing
  • Applications: Bridge rehabilitation, large structural connections

Installation Best Practices

Proper installation is critical for achieving design load capacity. The most common failure in epoxy anchoring is not the adhesive itself — it is poor hole preparation.

Hole preparation sequence:
  • Drill to specified diameter and depth (typically 10-15x rebar diameter)
  • Blow out dust with compressed air (minimum 3 cycles)
  • Brush with wire brush to remove drilling dust from hole walls
  • Blow again with compressed air
  • Check hole is clean and dry (or use wet-rated adhesive)
  • Injection sequence:
  • Insert mixing nozzle to bottom of hole
  • Inject adhesive from bottom up, filling approximately 2/3 of hole volume
  • Insert rebar or threaded rod with slow rotating motion
  • Adhesive should squeeze out at hole surface (confirms full fill)
  • Do not disturb during cure time
  • Load Capacity: What Determines It?

    The pull-out capacity of an epoxy anchor depends on four primary factors:

    • Concrete strength: Higher concrete grade means higher bond capacity
    • Embedment depth: Deeper = stronger (typical minimum is 10x bar diameter)
    • Hole cleanliness: Dust reduces bond strength by 30-50%
    • Temperature during cure: Cold temperatures extend cure time significantly
    For preliminary design, a M16 threaded rod installed at 200mm embedment depth in C30 concrete with our standard epoxy (XQ-ZJ-E585) provides approximately 80 kN characteristic tensile capacity. Actual design values should be verified with our technical team for your specific conditions.

    How long does epoxy anchor take to cure? At 25°C, our standard epoxy reaches load-bearing strength in 12 hours and full cure in 24 hours. Fast-set versions reach load-bearing strength in 4 hours. In cold conditions (5°C), cure times can be 3-4 times longer. Can epoxy anchors be used in wet concrete? Our chemical anchor (XQ-ZJ-C420) and vinyl ester formulations are rated for installation in damp or water-saturated holes. Standard epoxy requires dry conditions. What is the shelf life of anchor adhesive cartridges? Our cartridge products have a 12-month shelf life when stored at 5-25°C in original packaging.
