Concrete Column Strengthening: CFRP Wrapping, Steel Jacketing & Section Enlargement

Why Columns Need Strengthening

Columns are the most critical structural elements in a building. When a beam fails, the damage is usually localized. When a column fails, progressive collapse can bring down an entire floor or the whole structure.

Common reasons for column strengthening include increased floor loading from building use change, seismic retrofit to meet updated building codes, damage from vehicle impact or fire, deterioration from corrosion of internal reinforcement, and construction errors where reinforcement was omitted or concrete quality was deficient.

Three Strengthening Methods Compared

Method 1: CFRP Carbon Fiber Wrapping

Carbon fiber fabric is wrapped around the column and bonded with impregnation resin. The CFRP confinement jacket increases both the column's axial capacity and ductility.

How it works: The carbon fiber wrap provides lateral confinement pressure. When the column is loaded axially, the concrete tries to expand laterally (Poisson effect). The CFRP wrap resists this expansion, creating a triaxial stress state in the concrete that significantly increases its compressive capacity. Capacity increase: 2-3 layers of our 300g/m² unidirectional fabric typically increases axial capacity by 15-30% and ductility by 200-500%, depending on the column geometry and existing reinforcement. Advantages: Very fast installation (1-2 days per column), no change to column dimensions, minimal disruption, no additional weight, corrosion-free, excellent for seismic retrofit. Limitations: Requires corner rounding (minimum 25mm radius) for rectangular columns, CFRP cannot resist fire without additional protection, surface preparation quality affects performance.

Method 2: Steel Jacketing

A steel jacket (typically 4-6mm thick plate) is fabricated to fit around the column, leaving a gap of 20-30mm which is filled with non-shrink grout. The steel jacket provides confinement similar to CFRP but with additional fire resistance.

Capacity increase: 30-50% axial capacity increase is typical, with significant improvement in shear capacity. Advantages: Provides fire resistance, well-understood technology, can be designed for combined axial, shear, and flexural strengthening. Limitations: Heavy (adds 200-400 kg per column), increases column dimensions by 60-80mm on each face, requires welding on site (fire risk, fumes), must be protected against corrosion, slower installation (1-2 weeks per column).

Method 3: Concrete Section Enlargement

A new layer of reinforced concrete is cast around the existing column, increasing its cross-section. New reinforcement (longitudinal bars and stirrups) is connected to the existing column through drilled-in anchors.

Capacity increase: The most increase is possible — essentially creating a new, larger column. 50-100% capacity increase is achievable. Advantages: Most familiar to contractors, provides fire resistance, can significantly increase both axial and flexural capacity. Limitations: Most disruptive method (formwork, wet concrete, curing time), largest increase in column dimensions (100-200mm per side), heaviest (significantly increases dead load), requires foundation capacity check, longest installation time (2-4 weeks per column).
